1. Participation in Questions 2008
The Malaysian Group participated in the following scientific works in response to the following questions:

2. AIPPI Bid Presentation 2011 held in Singapore ??October 2007
On 7th October 2007, the AIPPI Malaysian Group participated in the bid to hold the AIPPI Forum & ExCo Meeting here in Kuala Lumpur in 2011. The group worked very closely with the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center to come up with a comprehensive bid proposal package and power point presentation which was subsequently presented in Singapore. The bid went to India.
3. Seminar on the Emerging Trends in the Intellectual Property Landscape ??2 October 2007
On 2nd October 2007, the AIPPI Malaysian Group supported the Joint seminar organized by the ASEAN IPA and the Malaysian Bar Council entitled ??merging Trends in the Intellectual Property Landscape??at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center. Invitated speakers from AIPPI?? group included:-
- Mr. Kevin Tottis from The Lawyers Office of Kevin Tottis, USA;
- Mr. Matthew Swinn from Corrs Chambers Westgarth Australia;
- Mr. Martin Michaus from Basham Ringe & Correa, Mexico
- Mr. Safir Anand from Anand & Anand, India;
- Renata Rignetti from Bugnion S.p.A., Italy;
- Robert Mitchell from Ogilvy Renault LLP, Canada; and
- Mr. Robert Miller from Spruson & Ferguson, Australia.
AIPPI members from the Malaysia group included Mr. Chew Phye Keat and Chew Kherk Ying. The full day seminar focused on three aspects of emerging trends in the IP landscape i.e Trends in Litigation, Trends in Technology and Regional Updates on the emerging trends in IP. Attached is a copy of the programme.
4. Participation at Congress Singapore 2007
This year the Malaysian Group was represented by 4 members at the ExCo and Congress.
5. Privilege Project Team
Mr. Chew Phye Keat, Hon Secretary of the Malaysian AIPPI Country Group has been invited to join the AIPPI task force on ??reaty on Client Privilege in Intellectual Property Professional Advice?? Essentially this treaty is intended to assist countries to enact laws within their jurisdiction to protect the confidentiality and privilege of advice given by IP professionals (who may or may not be practicing lawyers) to their clients.
6. Groups ExCo Members Meetings
The ExCo members of the Malaysian AIPPI Group met and had meetings on 3 occassions in 2007 where in depth discussions were held on how to promote the group locally and regionally.
7. New Initiatives for 2008
2008 has kicked off well with the National Group. The group had very recently on 10 April 2008 organized a seminar entitled ??ATENT UPDATE 2008??which was received well amongst local IP practitioners, local patent clients and our local government authorities.
It was a half day seminar which was held at the local AIPPI secretariat in Shearn Delamore & Co. The speakers were Mr Karl Rackette, a leading Patent Attorney from Germany who spoke on the topic ??CT ?? Challenges of the National Phase and Mr Chew Phye Keat who discussed the Impact of Public Health Issues on Exclusive Patent Rights.
More seminars are in the pipeline. Further the group is working on having its own website wherein potential members will be able to access the full database of the members of the National Group, list of all members of the National Group together with the biodata of the speakers and the papers presented at the seminars and/ or conferences.
Meetings are being arranged with the local authorities to expose them to the National Groups activities.
